The other day my wife and I babysat our neighbor’s three-year-old grandson, Sawyer, for a few hours. Sawyer lives in Anchorage, AK and was visiting his grandpa in Colorado. I was captivated by the fact that he was awestruck by the things we take for granted. As we played outdoors, every sound, movement of an insect, and new experience captured his attention and was met with wonder.
As adults, that sense of wonder is drummed out of us. Most people just sleepwalk through life, focusing on trivial matters like the car that took their parking space. We lock ourselves out of looking at the world and asking why things are the way they are. The natural world is full of answers that can often be applied to businesses in unique and unusual ways. For example, the idea for Velcro came about after a man saw how a sand burr’s hooks cause it to stick to his clothes and hair.
Do you see the magic in the things around you? What deadens your awareness and what heightens it?
