Deepfakes and the New Burden of Proof

For most of modern history, faking reality was expensive. If you saw a photograph, you assumed it captured something that actually happened. If you heard an audio recording of someone speaking, you believed they had said those words. If you watched a video, you trusted your eyes. Forgery existed, of course, but it required skill, access, and time. Deception was possible, but scaling it was difficult.

That quiet assumption, that visual and audio evidence carried weight, is now breaking down.

What’s different about AI-generated media isn’t just its quality. It’s the collapse in cost and speed. Convincing images, audio, and video can now be produced quickly and cheaply, not in some secret, well-funded lab or by some shadowy “deep state” actor, but by anyone with a decent prompt and an internet connection.

And once something becomes cheap and scalable, incentives shift.

This Is Bigger Than Politics

When people hear about deepfakes, they often think about elections or propaganda. That’s understandable because, historically, organizations with the goal of affecting elections or driving an agenda were often well-funded. But I think that framing misses the more immediate risk.

The more practical concern for any small business should be reputation-focused.

Imagine a convincing video circulating of the business owner making an inflammatory statement they never made. Or an audio clip of the president authorizing a wire transfer that never happened. Or a testimonial attacking your company that looks authentic but is completely fabricated.

In the past, those kinds of forgeries would have been rare and clumsy. Now they can be polished and timely. And timing matters a lot because the first version of a story that people encounter often becomes the one they believe. Even when a correction follows, they rarely travel as far or as fast as the original shock. By the time the truth catches up, the damage may already be done.

What Happens When Trust Gets Thin

The deeper issue isn’t the existence of fakes. It’s what happens when people stop knowing what to trust. There are two predictable reactions.

Some people will continue to assume that what they see and hear is real. They will remain vulnerable because they’re operating under old assumptions.

Others will swing in the opposite direction and begin to assume that everything is staged or manipulated. They disengage. They hesitate. They treat every piece of information as suspect.

Neither response is healthy.

Gullibility makes people easy to exploit. Cynicism makes coordination difficult. Markets depend on trust. So do contracts, hiring decisions, partnerships, and capital flows. When shared reality becomes fragile, friction increases everywhere.

You may not notice it as a crisis. You notice it as hesitation. Slower decisions. Extra verification steps. A growing sense that something feels unstable.

That’s how infrastructure quietly erodes.

Why This Matters for Small and Mid-Sized Firms

Large enterprises will eventually build dedicated teams around verification, brand protection, and digital authentication. They will invest in watermarking technologies, legal response protocols, and cybersecurity layers. But most smaller firms won’t.

If you run a business where reputation and relationships are central, synthetic media isn’t theoretical. It’s operational risk.

You may need to rethink internal processes around financial approvals. You may need clearer communication protocols for important decisions. You may need multi-factor confirmation before large transfers or public statements.

None of this is dramatic; it’s procedural. But procedures add friction, and friction has cost. The deeper shift is that verification itself becomes part of doing business.

Permanence Changes the Equation

There’s another layer here that doesn’t get enough attention. Some modern systems are designed to preserve information permanently and make it tamper-proof. Consider blockchain technology. That permanence is valuable when the information is accurate. However, it becomes problematic when it isn’t.

If false content is captured, archived, and redistributed across systems that are difficult to unwind, the burden of proof shifts. You’re no longer just correcting a rumor. You’re chasing persistence. And that changes the business’s exposure profile.

This Is an Incentive Story

It’s important to understand this idea clearly. The spread of synthetic media doesn’t require malicious masterminds. It requires incentives. We all know by now that content that triggers emotion spreads faster. Speed is rewarded. Engagement drives distribution. However, verification takes time.

When the cost of producing convincing media collapses, and the reward for rapid distribution remains high, the ecosystem tilts. Each individual actor may be behaving rationally. Collectively, trust thins. And trust, whether we admit it or not, is infrastructure.

So What Should Leaders Do?

The answer isn’t to panic. It’s to recognize that the environment is changing.

Business owners should assume that synthetic media risk is part of the landscape. That means tightening financial controls, clarifying internal communication chains, educating teams about verification practices, and having a response plan in place before a crisis arrives.

It also means recognizing that both business and personal brand exposure are no longer limited to what you actually say or do. Inexpensive fabrication changes the risk profile for anyone in a visible role.

In a world where reality is easier to manufacture, credibility has to be reinforced intentionally.
