I have often stated that most people are not really motivated by money itself. Rather, I say that money is just a means to achieve social and professional standing, also known as status.
I would add to that idea that the accumulation of wealth, most often accomplished through business ownership, also leads to personal freedom. The freedom to not rely on the government, the freedom to get out of bad or unpleasant economic situations, the freedom to fight oppression, etc.
