It amazes me that many businesses just play music when they put a prospect on hold during a phone call. All too often when we are placed on hold, we hear the default phone system music playing.
Why not use your customer’s hold time to actually market your business? Why simply have a canned music track playing, or worse yet, relying on a local radio station that may actually be promoting a competitor’s business?
Instead, record your own hold music that promotes your business! For example, you could include the benefits of dealing with your business or other facts that appeal to the caller. You could also include anything that is interesting to your potential customers such as special offers or upcoming events.
Recording your own hold music is a low-cost way to add another level of promotion to your business. You don’t need to hire a firm to record your message for you. Just follow these three simple steps!
- Find music on the internet that’s royalty-free. One of my favorite sites for free music is the YouTube Audio library.
- Write a script and record your message. You can record your own voice using a simple webcam or microphone plugged into your PC or laptop.
- Mix the music and your voice recording using a free tool such as Audacity.
Many potential customers just hang up when they are placed on hold. They don’t want to wait in silence or forced to listen to canned music or a local radio station. Using your customer’s hold time to market your business transforms your prospect from being a disgruntled caller into a satisfied prospect, and more importantly, an enlightened customer.
